Profile

I have been a photographer for most of my life. As the son of a professional photographer I had the unique access to the medium and it pervades my earliest memories. After working as a commercial photographer I became intent on developing my own unique personal vision and photographic dialogue.

In 1991 I came to New York and was energized by the possibilities these islands of creativity held. As an artist and mariner I felt I had found both a medium and a locale. Since that time I have increasingly sought out the synthesis and synergies of my life and art to develop a body of work that represents my experience.

Statement

I obscure in effort to clarify. By shooting along the littoral edge, I bring together the contrasts and symbiotic relationships of water, marsh and light. With these recognizable energies and organic elements I assemble hundreds of photographs creating a new visual tableau. My work can be interpreted from multiple perspectives, as viewers are forced to slow down in order to comprehend the stillness and interconnectivity of the composed images. Single photos break down natural phenomena to their elemental units. When combined, they create a seemingly random yet intricately ordered new environment. While utilizing shapes from the natural world and symbols from our collective unconscious I create a metaphorical milieu that both reflect nature’s composition and our connection to it. The work is deeply recognizable while simultaneously perplexing, highlighting the ever widening chasm between individuals and the primitive mystery and ultimate reality of the natural world around them.
